Notes
There are differing opinions regarding the dating of the painting. The fact that between 1594 and 1595 both Brueghel the Elder and Hans Rottenhammer were in Rome at this time speaks in favor of earlier dating. If the painting was created between 1596 and 1605, Rottenhammer would have painted the figures in Venice, where he was at the time, and then sent the painting to Antwerp, where Brueghel would have completed the painting with the execution of the landscape.
