Allegorical Female Figure

Description

Allegoric depiction of the liberal arts including a female figure surrounded by various object that represent the various arts as music, geometry, mathematics, and architecture. The presence of the cittern refers to music while the book represents the sciences in general. It has been suggested that the female figure presents Philosophy due to two instances: first, the woman is holding a scepter-like rod that symbolized authority over the arts represented in the objects, and, secondly, she is pressing the bare right breast as if she were nourishing the arts.
