The Adoration with Saint Roch
Description
Putti musicians cheer the Infant Jesus: the putto at right side is playing a lute, the putto in the middle is playing vielle, and the putto at the left side is holding a book (maybe containing music) while a lute is standing on the left side. The adoration is joined by Saint Roch, identified by his pilgrim staff and cape, by the lesion on his leg caused by the plague, and by the dog with the loaf of bread. Given the fact that Saint Roch was worshiped particularly during times of plague, it is very likely that the painting was executed during 1524 and 1529 when Milan was struck by a plague epidemic.
