Description

The panel was probably the main piece of an altar’s polyptych. It shows the Virgin (more standing than sitting) surrounded by angels with musical instruments (on the left side: lute, rebec, 2 tambourines, and shawm; on the right side: 3 lutes, rebec, straight trumpet). On the lower half on the left side: Apostle Thomas (the Doubter) standing and holding a belt which is a visual reference of an ancient story according which the Virgin returned from heaven to give Thomas her belt as evidence of her assumption into heaven.
