Description
Depicts Spencer Dyke, Edwin Quaife, violins; Ernest Tomlinson, viola; Bertie Patterson Parker, cello.
The Quartet is depicted seated around four music stands, playing, with bows on their instruments. The musicians are wearing suits, their faces mostly obscured by the light. A half-length portrait of a woman is on the wall as if watching over them. A large pot of pink hydrangeas is in the background, with a grand piano.
The Quartet gave, among others, the first performance of Alan Bush's 'String Quartet in A Minor' in 1925 in Hampstead and, at the Wigmore Hall on 22nd January 1929, Gordon Jacob's 'Quartet in C' which was dedicated to them. Spencer Dyke was one of the first violinists to make a recording.
