Description

Meissonier planned a cycle of five pictures which were to celebrate the important dates in the life of Napoleon (1776, the second Italian campaign; 1807, the period around the battle of Friedland; 1810, the year of the Treaty of Vienna and of his marriage to Mary-Louise, 1814, his defeat; 1815, his fall and his departure for St. Helena). Only two of these pictures were finished, the 1814 (Louvre), and this painting in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
