Description

Portrait of Sir George Grove, writer about music, founding editor of "Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians," and first director of London's Royal College of Music; he is seated on a pew-like bench with a stylized lyre at its end; his expression perhaps suggests pleasure at listening to music. Signed "Spy" under bench. Inscriptions in margins are: "Vanity Fair Jany.31, 1891" [above] and "VincentBrooks Day&Son.Lith" [below]
