Description

From the Národní galerie Praha website: Emilie Bubeníčková was a Prague singer, pupil of Pivoda’s School of singing. In the 1860s she used to sing at musical evenings of Umělecká beseda (association of artists, writers, musicians etc.); in 1869 she sang Mařenka in Smetana’s Bartered Bride. In his work on this portrait Purkyně probably used a photograph, now at the Smetana Museum in Prague. Purkyně’s only resources in this portrait were monumental form, plasticity of volume and limited colour range.
