Description

From Národní galerie Praha the website: Already during his first trip to Dalmatia in 1859 Čermák made drawings of the ancient Slavonic custom of kidnapping brides. In the mid-seventies he returned to this motif with a large composition in rich, almost Delacroix-like colours. He painted the moment, when the bridegroom, to the accompaniment of music and shooting, enters the festooned farm gate with the kidnapped bride in his arms. For the setting Čermák used only a lightly sketched landscape, relying on the contrasts of rich, brilliant colours and his unfailing brushwork. In the Dalmatian Wedding Čermák demonstrated his talent „to draw with colours“, wrote in 1908 Miloš Jiránek. Although unfinished, the painting is one of the painter’s most important late works.
