Description

Outdoor scene with a man seated, his right foot resting on his instrument case, playing a viola da mano (vihuela); hanging from the crook of a tree branch is a sign adorned with the letters PHIL/OTHE/O. From the Metropolitan Museum of Art website: Jean-Philotée Achillini was a poet versed in ancient languages, law, theology, and music born in Bologne in 1466, three years after his brother Alexander, a doctor and philosopher who was known by citizens of Bologne as "the second Aristotle".
