Description

Created from a patchwork of tapestry fragments, likely as a pendant to the Ladies Conversing with a Gentleman tapestry (museum no. T19s10) of similar size. The two tapestries were purchased by Isabella Stewart Gardner probably for about 1,800 francs from an unknown dealer in Paris on about 2 June 1892...[Source: Gardner Museum website] The scene in this one depicts three musicians in ceremonial attire playing trumpets; a fourth figure, in different attire, can be seen behind them.

Instruments [MIMO Code] (notes)

End-blown trumpet [6556] (three straight, valveless trumpets of differing length, two directed toward the sky and the longest one (possibly a slide trumpet) directed downward.)
