Description
The heavily muscled nude figure of John the Baptist occupies the center oval of a print surrounded by an ornamented border. His bearded face is shown in right profile. His arms are held straight to his sides with his hands on each upper thigh. He is striding forward with his left leg in front of his right leg. A rope belt at his waist holds an animal skin draped behind his legs. Two cherubs flank his head to the right and left in the border, and the cherub on the right is playing a trumpet. The title, Nuda veritas" Roma 1591, is written inside a circle above his head, and the head of a lion is below his feet. "Mang B pixit in Vaticano" is written in all capital letters at the bottom of the border identifying the painter Michelangelo.
