Description

Considered the greatest English cellist of his time, Lindley was the son of an amateur cello player, who started teaching him the violin when he was five and the cello four years later. In 1792 Lindley became a pupil of James Cervetto, the outstanding cellist of his day, who, after hearing him play, gave him free tuition. Two years later, he was appointed principal cellist at the Italian Opera in London, where he began an association with Domenico Dragonetti, the celebrated double-bass player, that lasted for over fifty years. In 1822, on the formation of the Royal Academy of Music, Lindley was appointed one of the first professors. He remained at the Academy until his retirement in 1851.
