Sacrifice to the God Pan
Description
A nude woman reclines in an outdoor scene while gazing up at a statue of the god Pan on a pedestal. She holds a chain in both hands that is attached to an open censer. A mirror lies on the ground just beyond her left hand. A man stands behind her playing a chalumeau as another woman draped in a robe makes an offering of flowers to Pan while she looks back over her left shoulder at the man. Two putti have offerings of grapes for the god. One of them is at the base of the statue and the other in the lower right corner holds a basket of grapes looking away from the scene. A temple in ruins appears in the background with a tree and forest to the right. The title is written in capitals with flourishes in the bottom margin. The artists' names, J.B.M. Pierre, pinxit, and L. Lempereur, sculpsit, appear at the lower left and right of the image. The printer's address, á Paris chez Marel rue St. Jacques no. 22, and Déposé are printed below the title on the left and right.
