Description

Daphne stands in the center of a forest fully nude as her legs begin to change into the trunk and roots of a laurel tree. Her left arm is extended straight up and her right arm lies across her forehead. Her face is turned down toward Apollo with her long hair blowing past her right arm, but her eyes are closed in rejection. Apollo kneels at her feet holding her by the waist with his right hand and reaching toward her face with his left hand. He looks up at her longingly with a halo around his head. He is wearing sandals and a tunic that reaches to his knees with his lyre slung on his back. The title, L'artiste, is printed in capital letters in the top margin. The caption is printed in the bottom margin. The artist's name appears at the lower left and the printer, Bertauts, at the lower right. The artist's initials are in the lower right corner of the print.
