Description

Apollo standing plays a lira in the center of a scene of a musical contest with Pan who is seated to Apollo's right. Apollo holds the viol under his chin and bows it. He is dressed as a 16th-century nobleman in a tunic, boots, and a laurel wreath on top of his long wavy hair. Pan is seated at the base of a tree facing Apollo with his panpipes to his right side while he listens to Apollo. The mountain god Tmolus listens to Apollo while seated on a large stone to Apollo's left. His tunic and sandals are plainer than Apollo's clothes. He has a broad forehead with long hair. Midas is seated on the stone behind Tmolus with his back to the viewer. His long hair is topped with a crown. An ocean or lake is in the background with mountains to the right in the distance. The artist's name is printed in block capital letters in the upper right of the print.
