The painting depicts the artist's studio in Paris. On the left is a large canvas, fully visible but largely blank. It partly blocks the view of an upright pianoforte, whose keyboard lid is open. The chair at the instrument is at a pronounced angle. A second chair to the right holds a pile of books or sheet music. A painting is displayed on the wall, and another rests on the floor.
