A girl is shown in right profile seated on the front of a chair playing on an upright piano. She is looking down at the keyboard, and her curled fingers of both hands are engaged in playing. She is wearing a dress with a lace collar, and her blond hair has a long braided ponytail. Her teacher, also in right profile, is standing closer in the foreground. Both of her hands are on the top of the back of a chair as she watches the girl playing. She is dressed in a thick sweater and a heavy, wool skirt with a matching hat and low-heeled shoes. The girl and the teacher both have serious expressions of concentration on their faces. The room is sparsely furnished with just the two chairs and two upright pianos right next to one another. The piano in the foreground has the keyboard closed. The wooden floor is laid in a herringbone pattern. There is a window in the back wall behind the girl from which light is streaming into the room providing the only light to the scene and causing the chairs and human figures to cast shadows on the floor. A heating radiator is underneath the window.
