A jazz combo consisting of a trombonist, pianist, trumpeter (or cornetist), an obscured musician (probably a guitar player to complete a typical jazz ensemble), clarinetist, and bassist are playing on stage before an audience. All of the musicians are standing except for the pianist. The trombone, trumpet, and clarinet players are fully visible. The pianist and bass player are behind the trumpet and clarinet players and only partly visible. Only the face is visible of one musician who is behind the trumpet and clarinet players. All of the players are wearing jackets and long ties. The faces of three audience members occupy the extreme right-hand side of the painting.
