The scene shows a French military band headed by a drum major with four musicians viewed by a small audience of peasants. The drum major is an elderly man wearing a tall shako with a red plume. His uniform is a blue coat, red vest, white pants, with a red, white and blue sash running from his right shoulder to his left side. He is saluting the audience with his right hand and holds a saber upright in his left hand. His glasses are perched on the end of his nose through which he is looking at a man in the audience. The musicians are all marching behind him in a line. Each of them is wearing a slightly different uniform with different military hats, each with a plume. From left to right they are playing a drum, an ophicleide, a serpent, and an oboe. The audience in front of the band consists of a man and two women with indistinct figures behind them. The man doffs his hat to the drum major with his right hand revealing a handkerchief covering his head. He is wearing a brown jacket with tails, a red vest, cravat, blue gloves, and white striped pants with a red, white, and blue sash across his waist. He leans on a red umbrella with his left hand.
