Description

In this caricature of French colonial life, a French man plays the violin for an audience of four sleeping aborigines in the Marquesas Islands of French Polynesia. He is playing the violin with the bow in his left hand while fingering the instrument with his right hand. He has a large red nose, an open mouth, and an intense expression on his face as he labors intently before a wooden music stand. He is wearing a black coat with tails, a yellow vest, and white pants. The sleeping natives are seated slumped on chairs next to the wall. Their dark skins are decorated with red and blue paint on their faces, arms, and chests, and they are wearing only striped shorts.
