Géricault, Théodore (1791-1824)
Item type:printDate of creation:1818Technique / Medium:lithography on paperPlace of creation:FranceDescription
A Mameluke soldier is seen from behind. He is supporting a French military bugler who has been wounded and is falling from a horse. The Mameluke is in Turkish clothes wearing a turban, a collarless shirt, and şalvar. A scabbard is tied around his shoulders with a rope and trails at his back. He has a sword in his right hand and uses his left arm to support the bugler who is falling from a horse. The Mameluke is standing on a dead soldier who is lying face down. The bugler holds the bugle in his right hand and is lying bent over backward on top of a horse, his face looking up toward the sky with closed eyes. The stallion rears up, its powerfully muscled hindquarters, outstretched tail, and flowing mane add to the drama of the scene. In the background at the left is a cavalryman attacking forward with a raised sword, while a cavalryman on the right is moving toward the Marmeluke and bugler. Clouds fill the sky.
