Violin player seated in the inn
Description
A scene inside an inn or tavern with five men, a woman, and a small child gathered around a bench. One man has a recorder stuck in his hat and is seated playing the violin with a large wooden beer stein at his side. Three men are singing: two standing and one seated. The seated singer is leaning back with his hands outstretched, his hat in one hand and a drinking goblet in the other. One standing singer is stirring something in a bowl. The other singer with a large paunch is wearing a liberty cap and holding a drink in a glass with his other hand on his hip. One man is seated on the bench hunched over smoking. The woman is tending to a child holding its hands. A dog in the middle of the scene sits calmly watching a man bent over at the hearth holding two smoking pipes. In the background, there are two men at a table. One is pouring a drink as the other watches and smokes a pipe. An advertisement is posted on the mantel of the hearth. The caption to the print reads: Rusticus ex animo, non pullus Hÿpocrita gaudet.
