St. Jerome is seated on flat stones and leaning on his right forearm while gazing in wonder up into heaven at an angel flying above the clouds and playing a twisted trumpet. Jerome's gaunt body is naked except for a large sheet draped over his loins and thighs. His right hand with fingers extended points toward the angel while holding a quill pen in his left hand. Several books are at his right hand and by his right foot. A lion's head is in the lower right looking at one of the open books, and a human skull is in the background behind Jerome's right shoulder. The background is stormy with broken trees.
