St. Francis is sitting on the ground leaning against a tree or bank with his head resting on a crucifix held by his hands placed on his left thigh and right shoulder. A skull is under his left elbow and resting against his left side with a drinking cup and basket next to it on the ground. Prayer beads are under his left hand. His head leans to the left, and he is in a trance. In the upper left of the scene, a vision of a naked cherub is seated on a cloud in the sky playing violin by bowing with his left hand and holding the tuning pegs in his right hand. The bottom of the violin rests on the cherub's left thigh with the body of the instrument on his right thigh. Rays of sunshine radiate from behind the cherub.
