Description

Metzmacher (1815–after 1872) was self-taught engraver, who exhibited at the Salon from 1845 to 1872. He engraved portraits by a number of dignitaries, including Napoléon III (1859), Franz Joseph of Austria (1860), the future Kaiser Wilhelm I (1861) and the Grand Duke of Luxemburg (1862).
The portrait of Berlioz was produced for the literary and artistic journal L'Artiste, and appeared on 6 December 1857, in the series "Galerie du XIXe siècle", no. IX (facing p. 210), along the article "Hector Berlioz" (pp. 209–214) by his great admirer and later successor as music critic on the Journal des débats, Ernest Reyer.
Metzmacher produced the portrait after the photograph by Nadar taken on 13 January 1857, adding the background with two pillars on the left and fringed curtain on the right. The portrait was printed by "Imp. Sarazin R. Git-Cœur 8, Paris".
