Description

The canvas' title "El Dulce Nombre de María" (“The Sweet Name of the Virgin Mary”) refers to the Christian liturgical festival on the occasion of the commemoration of the name of Mary, celebrated on 12 September. The celebration was authorized in 1513, and performed in the Spanish city of Cuenca for the first time. From then on it spread all over Spain and the territories abroad controlled by Spain. In 1683 Pope Innocent XI declared the celebration a thanksgiving for the defeat of the Turks at the siege of Vienna. The canvas of Cristóbal de Villalpando presents the Virgin Mary in front of an altar and surrounded by eight angels of which three are associated with musical instruments (harp, viol, and a cornett) and one (on the very right side) seems to hold a song book or musical score (not legible).
