Depicts the artist in his Paris studio, smoking in front of an upright pianoforte. Standing slightly side on, he turns to meet the viewer's gaze. Sheet music is open on the piano's music stand, and the keyboard lid is open. In front of the artist is a low table, upon which are his painting tools: brushes of various lengths, tubes of paint, a palette and bottles of liquid.
Paintings are displayed hanging on the wall above the piano, and more are stacked against the wall beside the piano.
The artist was a proficient pianist and organist.
