Description
Pegasus is standing in the center of the painting on a rock and is surrounded by the singing and playing muses and male friends, all in European dress. In the background stand a small group of women. According to the National Gallery, the painting was probably intended to be part of a piece of furniture, perhaps the lid of a musical instrument.
