Description
A conductor leading an orchestra; he stands in front of a music stand, arm in the air waving his baton; around him, the orchestra, looking up at him. The title refers to French composer and conductor Philippe Musard (1792-1859), who was crucial to the development and popularity of the promenade concert. One of the most famous personalities of Europe during the 1830s and 1840s, his concerts in Paris and London were great successes. No. 13 in a lithographic series entitled 'Les Bonnes têtes musicales', published by Aubert & Cie in 1836-37, depicting satirical scenes of musicians.
