Description
Portrait bust of composer Gerald Finzi by Jemma Pearson. The original sculpture was worked in clay at the artist's studio before being cast in bronze using the lost wax method at Castle Fine Arts Foundry. Plinth is of apple veneer on top of birch plywood, made by cabinetmaker, John Beavan Ltd. Apple wood veneer was chosen for the plinth in reference to Gerald Finzi's interest in apple growing, a pursuit that led to the composer saving a number of rare British apple varieties. The marquetry within the veneer of the musical score and the accompanying words for that section of music at the bottom of the plinth was inlaid by Joe Geoghegan at Heritage Inlay Design Ltd. The plinth is inlayed with the words 'All my work hath pros-per'd well', an excerpt from Gerald Finzi's last composition, "Since We Loved". The bust was presented to the Royal Academy of Music by the Finzi Trust, 26 September 2017.
