Description
The first theater on this site opened in 1663, burned in 1672 and was replaced by one probably designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The latter was demolished in 1791 and replaced by Henry Holland's expanded and improved design, seen here. This opened in 1794 but survived only briefly. It was believed to be fireproof, but burned in 1809, a shortly after this print was published, and replaced by a building designed by Benjamin Wyatt.
