Item type:paintingDate of creation:1551-1575Height:66.0 cm (26 in.)Width:121.3 cm (47 3/4 in.)Technique / Medium:oil on woodDescription
In the center a framed depiction of Diana resting from the chase and emptying an urn of water. On each side of this depiction are: decoration, a caryatid (composed by three female figures) and naked children (probably putti), among whom there are on the left side four playing instruments (small harp, end-blown wind instrument (flute?), transverse flute, and lute), and on the right side two pairs holding open books (of music?). At the center of this composition is the origin of the name of Fontainebleau: a thirsty hunting dog named Bleau separated from its master and found in the forest a clear, pure spring; his master, "one of our kings," named the spring after him "la Fontaine de Bleau."
