Notes

Courbet and Promayet attended school together; Promayet was first in drawing; he went to Russia, where he became a private teacher for a branch of the Romanoff family, tutoring and supervising the education of a young son of the family both in Russia and afterwards in Paris. Courbet made two or three other portraits of Promayet, a drawing (signed and dated, 1847), a bust-length portrait (without signature and date), and a second bust-length.
