Description

Portrait of Louis Gueymard (1822-1880), a tenor with the Paris Opéra, in the role of "Robert" from Meyerbeer's opera Robert le Diable, playing dice with two servants of the devil, while Bertram, his father and evil genius, looks on from the background at the right. In this scene Robert sings about the dangers of the lust for gold in the celebrated aria L’or est une chimère (Gold is but an illusion).
