Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860-1908) was a famous American musician and composer. He was married to Mary Mears, the sister of Helen Farnsworth Mears. The mentioned "Sonata Tragica" might be MacDowell's Sonata tragica op. 45, published in 1893.
