On the far left side of this work is a soldier blowing a straight trumpet. The subject of the painting was inspired by the Book of Esther (6, 11) and by Racine's tragedy "Esther". The painting is a study for a tapestry cartoon (Musée des Arts, Louvre, Paris) that was painted in Rome in 1739.
