Description

Left wing of an altar depicting scenes of the life of Saint John the Baptist. Upper part: Salome dancing at the banquet of Herod, male figure playing rebec. Middle part: the beheading of Saint John the Baptist. Lower part: burial of Saint John the Baptist by his disciples and the posthumous miracle. At the panel's lowest part three saints are presented: an unknown female saint, Saint Lawrence of Rome (with gridiron and palm leaf), and Paul the Apostle (with sword and book).

Notes

Provenance: Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Tobed (Zaragoza, Spain); it is completed by the right altar wing, depicting the history of Mary Magdalene (also at the Prado Museum, inv. no: P03106), and the central panel with the Virgin and the Child with King Henry II of Castile (1333-1379) who donated the altar.
