A female child standing next to a miniature-sized melodeon, pressing a key. the instrument has a lyre-base made up of facing C-scrolls. Music is on the stand (not legible).

The painting is a companion-piece of "Unidentified woman" also at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) accession number 38.146.5. Although the back of that painting is written "Elizabeth Quincy/Smith" it has not been possible to verify the identity of the subject.
