Description
Bearing the semblance of nine heroic figures of the Bible (Joshua, David, Judas Maccabeus), paganism (Hector, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar) and Christianity (Charlemagne, King Arthur, Godfrey of Bouillon) are the most important members of the Saluzzo family, all wearing armour and holding insignias and standards. They are flanked by the nine heroines (Penthesilea, Teucha, Thamyris, Lampeto, Ethiopia, Semiramis, Hippolyte, Sinope and Delphile) who represent the wives of the nine marquises. Between Joshua and Judas Maccabeus is King David (representing Marquis Frederick I), who holds the Book of Psalms, the sword and the slingshot; a golden harp is depicted in a blue coat of arms.
