Description

The family portrayed here is that of the merchant David Leeuw, who was engaged in trade with Russia and around 1670 one of the wealthiest residents of Amsterdam, and his wife Cornelia Hooft. This couple chose to be portrayed on a large scale with their music-making children. The boy on the right, Pieter, plays a viola da gamba, Weyntje in the middle plays a harpsichord, and her two sisters Maria and Cornelia have sheets of music in their hands. The youngest girl, Suzanna, clutches a rattle. The immensely detailed rendition of the sheet music tells us which piece is being performed. It is a balletto by the Italian composer Gastoldi, which was later published in the seventeenth century with a Dutch text.
