Description
Allegory of the friendship connecting the artist with the merchant Johannes Radermacher. The relationship between the two started in the period they were both in London (1570s). Hoefnagel dedicated other works to his friend, like the books with representations of insects. Here the musical instruments are connected to the young woman with a flower wreath on her head. She might be the personification either of the senses or of the liberal arts. The instruments are collected in a stone basket. The woman holds an opened book with music on her lap.
