Description
Howard painted at least three similar portraits of Corelli whom he must have met while in Rome between 1697 and 1700, but this example is unique in including a surround of music and musical instruments. In the foreground lie two violins and a book of music which shows on the left the opening bars of Corelli's Trio Sonata opus 3 no. 7. The music on the right page is the opening of the second movement (Allegro) of his Sonata opus 5 no. 6 for solo violin and continuo, published in 1700.
