Bell-ringing scene on 12th-century rune stone

    Item location

  • Harg kyrka
The rune stone is located at Hargs skog, about 3 km north of Hargs bruk.

Description

The text on the stone reveals that it was erected by two men in memory of their father and his mother. In the area between the two parallel lines of runes the rough outline of a belfry in which there is a bell has been cut into the stone. No details are visible. On the other hand the bell-rope and the arm it is attached to are clearly carved. At the bottom of the stone the persons who are pulling the rope can be seen. The depiction of the bell-ringing and the runes were probably cut at the same time, during the first half of the twelfth century.
