Description

A man sings and plays mandolin to two women and another man. In the background is a view of Florence. From the Cleveland Museum website: "Cole visited Italy in 1831 and made a sketch of this vista of Florence shortly before sunset. Six years later, in New York, he transformed his drawing into this painting, adding picturesque figures and luxuriant green foliage to the foreground. Exhibiting this picture alongside a view of the Catskill Mountains in New York in 1837, Cole set out to prove that he had mastered the very different landscapes of the Old and New Worlds."
