Description
Two men playing large frame drums, man playing jingles on a stick, and thirteen men dancing. --- From the artist's own catalog: The Society of “Slaves,” always existing in this tribe, is composed of eight or ten young men of the first families, who volunteer to be slaves to the chief, to protect him, and to perform all that he commands. They associate for a certain number of years, after which they are exempt, for the remainder of their lives, from all slavish or menial duties, both in war or in times of peace. They elect one of their number for their master, who orders the dance and other services.
