Description

Seventeen figures on Mount Helicon. Apollo, seated at the center, plays a lira da braccio. The nine Muses are in two groups, at the left and right. They play two lirone, one plucked, the other bowed; a tambourine with jingles; a triangle with four rings; a lute; cymbals; a small organ; and a straight trumpet. One of the Muses is posed for singing - she is seated beside the organist and holds an open book - but her mouth is closed. Another lirone lies on the ground beside the organ, and in front of it another music book lies open. An ornamental border contains eight winged male grotesque figures playing curved wind instruments. Four of the figures also hold straight trumpets. This motif appears in many other works by members of the Reymond family. On the reverse: Fame, playing a curved trumpet and holding a straight trumpet.
