The painting belongs to a series of a total of 54 paintings (all preserved today at the Museo de San Francisco in Santiago de Chile), depicting scenes of the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. The series was most probably painted in Cusco (Peru) between 1670 and 1680. The painting shows Saint Francis and an angel playing the vihuela, symbolizing the healing power of angelic music.
