Description
Group of Muses, one playing tambourine, one playing lyre, one holding a wind instrument, and one playing a stringed instrument, with a group of 12-13 other female mythological figures in a crowd and a group of 15 males in a crowd (most likely human). In Ovid's Metamorphoses, the Pierides challenge the Muses to a contest in poetry. When the Muses win the contest, the Pierides refuse to accept defeat and want to attack the Muses. Apollo punishes them by transforming them into magpies.
