The coronation of Louis XII

Description

Side panel of a tryptich from the cathedral Notre-Dame d'Amiens depicting the coronation of the French king Louis XII. The king is shown kneeling, surrounded by the twelve peers of the kingdom: the religious peers (Archbishop of Reims and bishops) on one side, and the secular peers (dukes and counts) on the other, identifiable by their coats of arms. Each carries one of the regalia he is about to present to the future sovereign. On the galleries on both sides are two musicians each playing long trumpets. The other side panel provides a depiction of the coronation of David being crowned king of Israel (see RIdIM item: 10881). The reverse side shows a Pietà inspired by Rogier van der Weyden.
